If you’re looking for a fun, quality kids’ movie to see in theaters, there’s no better choice than Zootopia. In fact, it’s historically good, with a 99% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 96% audience score. Many critics have called it an all-time Disney classic, which is high praise indeed.
The film follows Judy the Bunny, a character who joins the city’s all-animal world’s police force. She gets simple work due to her size, but finds the opportunity to crack a big case with a reluctant fox, Nick Wilde. The world Disney created for the film is visually stunning and detailed, to the point that it merits multiple viewings, and is actually worth the extra ticket price to see it in 3D. The story ends up at a somewhat serious point, where the stronger, predatory animals are persuaded by a politician to gang up on the weaker ones. It’s a bit deep on the surface, but done with good finesse and an anti-bullying theme.
The cast includes Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy, Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde, and also features Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Kristein Bell, J.K. Simmons and Tommy Chong. Music is always important in a Disney movie, and Zootopia is no exception, with the big songs performed by Shakira. With other movie studios getting so much attention for kids’ films over the last 10-20 years, it’s great to see a new Disney movie that honors the brand name so well, and is equally enjoyable for both children and adults.
